I love Junky Chicken!

July 2, 2010

Hey everyone,

Just a quick post today to tell ask you all to go and check out my wife’s newly relaunched shop on Folksy.

Upcycling maps amazing

She’s got a new banner, some new products and it’s still all as awesome as it ever was. She needs some favourites and some sales (she had 31 sales in the old shop!) – so feel free to fall in love with something and snap it up.

She totally deserves as much love as you can spare as she is just brilliant. This is why I married her you see.

You can also look at some of the great presents she’s made me over the years in my series ‘Jenny’s Amazing Gifts‘, right here on this blog!

Anyway, more proper posts coming soon.

Lovely to see you all!

Other words for wife…

February 5, 2010

Hello people,

cheesy stock photo dictionary

Today I want to speak to you about words. You see I don’t like to refer to Jenny as my ‘wife’ (though so far that’s what I’ve been doing), and not because I’m not completely proud and grateful that I’ve achieved such an amazing thing in my life – marrying her – but because it makes us sound much older than we are really. Surely there are other ways of saying wife? and husband? We’re still very young and thus I’d like to find some new terms to replace these ones. I mean, we’re only in our mid-twenties! We’re babies I tells ya!

babies in love - cute as hell.

Jenny doesn’t like ‘other half’ very much, and does it really say ‘husband’ or ‘wife’? The ‘ol’ ball and chain’ is horrible really as she’s not a ball and chain at all and she’s certainly not old! She’s more of a young…helium balloon(?) or something, in the sense that she is not old and makes me feel joyous, light and just plain lovely (balloons are amazing at making you feel this way I’ve found). So really ball and chain is definitely not an option.

real ball and chain

I actually used to own a ball and chain just like this one (seriously)

‘Partner’ doesn’t really say we’re married as such, so that’s useless (and I don’t particularly like it anyway) and so we need to think of something new.

I started by doing some research:

The thesaurus (linked above) offers me these synonyms: bride, companion, consort, helpmate, mate, monogamist, other half, partner, roommate, spouse.

Some of these are clearly hilarious and I’m tempted to use them just for that. I mean, roommate?! That isn’t a synonym for wife!! Helpmate is a good one as she’s often helping me do something or other, but I’ve never heard this term and I doubt anyone else has so it might take a bit of explanation everytime I use it. Monogamist is an interesting one, but a bit cold (and insane?) perhaps – and I’d be crazy to choose that.

Consort is definitely a contender as it would be very amusing to say to people things like – ‘Me and my consort Jenny went for a walk yesterday, only to find we weren’t wearing any shoes!’ The only problem is that people might not realise that I’m married to Jenny in this case, which really renders this term useless as a replacement. Damn.

sidekicks?

So if we go lower in the thesaurus entry it offers some synonyms for ‘partner’, a few of which I like the idea of. Sidekick is a cool one I think, and we’d feel a bit like superheroes perhaps! But Jenny might get a complex, or feel inadequate about being my sidekick. Unless I was her sidekick, but then – I like to wear trousers sometimes in this relationship and I would be conceding any chance of that if I became her permanent sidekick.

I like ally too but it’s one of those words that looks wrong when you write it so I’ve gone off it almost immediately.

It would seem that this is an extremely hard task and at this point I’ve not reached any definitive decisions. What do you think? Do you have any other ideas of words to use? Maybe you’ve got made-up words you could suggest, or just one’s I haven’t thought of? Either way I’d like to know, so let me know if you’ve got any thoughts.

Anyway, that’s my blog post for today. I will post another one soon, but entirely at my own whim. =D

See you again soon I hope,

Joe

Jenny’s Amazing Gifts – Part 2

December 19, 2009

Hello everyone,

Today we’re going to look at another one of the awesome gifts that Jenny has made me over the years we’ve been together.

Now Jenny knows me very well indeed and some of you may know by now (if you’ve been paying attention) that I absolutely *love* tiny things. Jenny used this knowledge when making my birthday card last year and the results will astound and amaze.

How tiny is that?!

As you can see above, she made the most amazingly brilliant birthday card ever! It’s one of my cards, only it’s big enough to put on the end of my nose, or to be carried around on my thumb. The card was actually printed out using our printer, she made the envelope herself and she even made a tiny first class stamp! Look!

Miniature stamp

Even the address is genius. =)

On the inside it reads (in tinsy-winsy writing):

‘Dear Joe,

I hope you can read this!

Happy Birthday!

Love Jenny’

I know – how did she fit all that in such a tiny card? I don’t know either, but lets just accept it and not feel bad that we aren’t able to understand it.

Anyway, that’s all for today. But there are many more wonderful gifts for me to share, a couple of secrets to tell you and a couple of courses to show you pictures of – so keep your eye on this blog (though I wouldn’t expect many blog entries over christmas to be honest) for it’s all very interesting.

Happy Christmas to you all! I hope you all have a beautiful time free from work and have plenty of good cheer. =)

See you again soon,

Joe.

Jenny’s Amazing Gifts – Part 1

October 29, 2009

Hello there people,

Today I start a series of blog posts entitled ‘Jenny’s Amazing Gifts’ in which I will share with you a different amazing gift that Jenny, my wife and the illustrious creator of beautiful things over at Junky Chicken, has made me over the last 5 and a half years.

There’s 8 or 9 to show you so lets get started!

Now, as Jenny has just pointed out, I actually sort of started this series a few weeks ago with this post. So the second thing I’m going to show you is the amazing wallet she made me a few years back.

My wallet had started falling to pieces after years of being sat on, and I understandably needed a new one, but all I could find in shops were stupid designer wallets, wallets that wouldn’t have things in the right places (or would be lacking essential compartments), or would just be plain crazy.

A shoe wallet?!

So without my knowledge Jenny took my current wallet (while I was asleep or passed out I guess) and carefully studied it’s layout. Then while I was at work (I assume), she would be working away at it in anticipation to whatever celebration it happened to be for (which at this point I really can’t remember).  Anyway, it all turned out very well, as it was a beautiful, perfectly designed wallet.

It was obviously a lot less sat-on when she first gave it to me. =P

Beautiful handmade wallet opened up

Look at all the well placed compartments! So practical.

It’s mind-boggling that this is all handmade, and also that I’m still using this wallet now and it must be at least 3 years (perhaps even 4!) since I started sitting on it daily. The outside is made from various colours and textures of fabric overlapping each other to make a lovely stripy design. The inside has a velcro sealing change section, 3 card sections (that can fit a good 4-5 cards each) and a section for what I can only assume rich people use for wadges of that fancy paper money they use.

He's so rich, he doesn't even want anyone to know!

Anyway, it was an amazing gift and must have taken so much thought, time and effort! So I’m thinking you should all now go and buy something from Jenny’s shop, now you’ve been enlightened to her brilliance…

Or perhaps you need more convincing? In which case, stay tuned for part 2! (or 3)

Speak to you all soon,

Lovely seeing you,

Joe
